Teen Patti is a popular card game that originates from India but it has gained popularity not just in Southeast Asia but also globally as online platforms have added this card game to their variety of card games. If you plan to learn only one thing about Teen Patti before testing it out, then that would be card ranks. Just like in poker games, winning on Teen Patti is based on the value of the hand that you have compared to your opponents. Now, let’s look at each hand from the highest hand to the lowest.

You are extremely likely to aim for the win if you have a Trail at your hands. As this sweet combination is known to be the winning combination, it has many other names such as set, trio or three of a kind. As you may guess by the name, a Trail refers to three cards of the same rank. For instance, three twos are a trail, although that one is the weakest of them all. Lucky ones are those who get three Aces – the best combination of cards at the game.

After a Trail there is a Pure Sequence: three consecutive cards of the same suit. You have the best Pure Sequence at your hand if you have A-2-3. Other good ones are A-K-Q or K-Q-J. The lowest Pure Sequence is 4-3-2. Other names for this hand are Pure Run, Straight Run and Straight Flush.

After Pure Sequence comes Sequence. Also called as Normal Run or Straight, Sequence is made of any three consecutive cards. Thus, the hand can be combined from any suits as long as the cards are consecutive. The best is once again A-2-3, then A-K-Q and so on, the lowest one being 4-3-2.

Whereas the first three are quite uncommon, a Colour (also called Flush) has a bit higher probability. A Colour is created when you have any three cards of the same suit regardless of the card rank. For instance, cards Q-9-5 in Heart suit is a Colour. As there is no rank order in Colour, two or more players could have the same hand. In this case the rank of the highest card in hand is compared. If these are the same, then the next one is compared and finally the last one. In a rare case where all card values are the same, the decision is made by suits in the following order from best to worst: spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs.

The final two are a Pair and a High Card which are two of the most common hands in Teen Patti. A Pair (or Double) is a pair of two cards of the same rank. Pair could be, for instance, a 9-2 combination of hearts or Q-J combination of diamonds. If both of these were the highest hands in the game, Q-J would win due to its cards higher in value compared to 9-2. The highest Pair is A-A-K and the lowest is 2-2-3. If no Pairs or hands higher than that occur in the game, then the High Card decides who wins. If two or more have the same High Card, other cards on the hand are compared.

Probabilities

Like in all card games, Teen Patti also has calculated probabilities that are good to keep in mind when playing. Knowing the probability on how strong the hand is helps you to decide what to do next and lets you understand the game dynamics a bit better. At the beginning you may only focus on the basics on how frequent certain hands are. However, if you go more into the game then learning probabilities and creating tactics around it will be beneficial in the long run.

The most unlikely ones regarding probability are the highest hands – Trail, Pure Sequence and Sequence. A bit surprisingly perhaps, having Pure Sequence has a bit higher possibility (0,22% or 459,42:1) than a Trail (0,24% or 424,00: 1). However, a Trail has a higher value in any case. However, it is valuable to know that in many games the probabilities of a Trail and Pure Sequence are evened out on purpose by counting a combination of 2-3-5 as a Pure Sequence.

After the `Aces´ of the game comes Sequence and and Colour with slightly higher probabilities of 3,26% (or 29,69: 1) for Sequence and 4,96% (or 19,16 :1) for Colour. The most common ones, Pair and a High Card, are far more likely to occur in game with their 16,94% occurrence for a Pair and 74,39% occurrence for a High Card.

Game play

As mentioned before, there is a requirement to place a boot before the game actually starts. The pot is collected to the middle of the table and three cards are dealt clockwise to each player. At this stage it is possible to fold and thus leave the game, although it must be said that the player loses the sum put to the pot and cannot come back to that game anymore.

Often there is also blind betting before the game starts – there can be two forced blinds, one forced blind or an optional blind. Two forced blinds are the most often used one. The one starting the game places a bet that is half of the set bet amount at the beginning, and the next one puts on a big blind which equals the minimum bet amount that was set. Blind bets are set only by blind players.

The exciting part of Teen Patti is related to blind players and seen players. Based on what your chosen strategy is you may choose to be a blind player – a player who does not look at the cards given to him or her or you can be a seen player, thus check your cards. The bet amount the player has to place depends on whether they are blind or seen players. The basic bet rule goes as follows:

  • Blind players bet at least the current bet amount which is the minimum bet amount at the beginning. If blind player places more than the minimum stake, then that becomes the new current stake. Blind players can place twice as much as the current stake at most.
  • Seen players have to bet at least twice the current stake but not more than four times the current stake.
  • Blind players can turn into seen players by looking at their cards. From that point on they have to follow through the betting rules for seen players.

Then what is the current bet when a seen player has placed his or her bet? In that case, the current bet for the next player is half of the bet amount the seen player placed.

The current bet is also often called as Chaal, referring to both Call and Raise. Thus, there are no specific names for these two. The explanation of why it is so is quite simple. In poker terms, a Call refers to betting the same amount aka matching with what was bet previously. However, if the player before is a blind player, then it is by default a Raise since the Teen Patti rules require the seen player to place at least double of what the blind player has placed before.

Betting is all fun and games, but how to decide who is the winner? There are a couple of ways to do this.

How to win? Folding, a Show and a Sideshow explained

The simplest one is when only one player has not folded. In this case, the cards that the player has do not matter since everyone else has given up on the game. The player wins the pot. Another way to win Teen Patti is by show. Show happens when there are only two players in the game, thus others have folded their cards.

Firstly, one of the players requests a show by paying for it. In a show, cards are shown and compared. The one with the stronger hand wins unless the hands are equally strong. In such a rare situation the player who did not ask for the show is the winner.

Another option during Teen Patti is to request for a Sideshow which makes the game more exciting and gives you a chance to drop a weaker player from the game – although, if you end up being the weaker one, you have to fold and end the game from your part. A sideshow is also called a compromise. A player requests the sideshow from the player who bet before, and that player can either decide to accept or reject the sideshow. If the player accepts the sideshow, the following happens:

  1. Those two players compare the cards privately.
  2. The one who has a better hand, continues the game. The one having lower cards must fold.
  3. The player who requested the sideshow must fold in a rare case where the value of the cards is equal.

In a case of a refusal, the game continues as usual and both players stay in the game. The turn goes for the next player.

Variations

It is better to learn the base game throughout before going further into variations. Variations are added to many Teen Patti games in order to make them a bit more thrilling especially for those players who have played the game for a long time already. There are so many variations that it would not make sense to go through all of them, but here you may read about the most popular ones. Make sure to check how the variation game is played before trying one out.

The most common one is Best-of-four. It also is the easiest variation to learn. In this variation, four cards are dealt instead of three, after which players choose which three they want to keep. After this, the Teen Patti game continues as usual.

Another fun variation is the Low wild or High wild. In low wild, the lowest card that the player receives out of the three cards handed out is the wild card for that player. For High wild, the logic is the same except that now the card highest in value is the wild.

Finally, there is Blind (Kaana) King and Jack. In this variation, all Kings and Jacks with only one eye shown on the card with their side profile are considered as wilds.
